I find it a little bit funny that it was only a few months ago that Garnett Lee on 1up Yours declared that the summer of ‘08 was one that was devoid in software releases after the release of Metal Gear Solid 4. He later retracted that statement in a later episode; it’s pretty remarkable how many new games were to be coming down the pipeline, particularly in the form of downloadable titles. Between Geometry Wars 2, Pixeljunk Eden, Galaga Legions, Bionic Commando Rearmed, Castle Crashers (seriously!), is some serious downloadable love in the upcoming weeks. And Megaman 9 is on the horizon too!
This week’s gaming regiment has consisted of a little bit of MGS4 just to finish my second playthrough no-kill style, my daily dosage of WiiFit exercise, more WoW endgame raiding, a couple of little stumblings through my Pixeljunk Eden garden to L2P, and a lot of stumbling through Soul Calibur IV, my entry into the series.

While reading through the gaming section on Digg, I stumbled upon a cool bit of news from arstechnica regarding the awesome folks at OCRemix, a prominent video game music remixing community. Apparently their Street Fighter 2 remix album, Blood on the Asphalt, caught the eyes and ears of Rey Jimenez at Capcom months back and the artists involved in the album are now working on the soundtrack to the upcoming downloadable Street Fighter II HD Remix for PSN and XBLA. Though some of the tracks are being modified/reinterpreted, the article makes it seem like the entirety of the soundtrack will be done by the OCR kids. What an incredible opportunity!
It’s definitely cool to know that I’ve got links to people in the gaming industry now, having met a couple of the remixers (djpretzel, Zircon, pixietricks) via my friend Shariq (Darkesword) a couple of times in Philadelphia for Wizardworld Comic Convention. It also gives me another point to be jealous over besides their immense musical talent: they’re being contracted by Capcom, a company I’d absolutely love to work for one day! Congratulations guys!
I can’t wait till HD Remix is released…I’ll be there day 1,

This year’s E3 has been sort of a mixed bag. Although we were treated with the mega bombshell slap-Sony-in-the-face announcement of Final Fantasy XIII for the Xbox360, the rest of the expo teetered on boring. Microsoft had little to say about their future (which was partially their own fault by pulling the plug on the announcement of Bungie’s secret next project), Nintendo gave their die-hard faithfuls a box of tissues, and Sony had little to say that was actually new. The conference became more of an event for the mainstream and less of an event for the enthusiast; fewer marquee games, more of an emphasis on the sales and revenue. E3 is no longer the spectacle it once was. Despite this, there were still a few good things to emerge from the ashes of the old conference and there are some clear industry trends that stuck out more to me this year than others.

E3, salty tears
The Sony E3 Conference, for lack of better words, was pretty good. There was no shocking “OH SNAP” moment nor was there any counterpunch to Microsoft’s own shocker. At the same time, their conference seemed to be very balanced (albeit shooter heavy) in regards to the features they would be providing in the future with a strong focus on PSN and PSP.

The Nintendo E3 conference was not as shocking and unexpected as the Microsoft conference the day before. After all, the killer app (the Wiimote extension Wii Motion Plus) was revealed a day earlier. Quite frankly, they don’t need to wow anyone. Nintendo already dominates the mindshare of the mainstream consumer, and their conference really exploited that fact: the core gamer games were almost non-existent. The fact that the Nintendo conference was not targeted toward their loyal and rabid fanbase is pretty much a slap in the face and not a good sign of what’s to come. NOA President Reggie Fils-Aime’s response on G4? “How could you feel left out? The Animal Crossing that we’ve been hearing about that people wanted. Fully connected to the Internet, go to other people’s towns. Plus as I said, Grand Theft Auto on the DS. How do you feel left out with those types of announcements?” Yeah, ok. Anyhoo, casual games incoming!
