E3 Day 1: The Microsoft Keynote Megatons

July 14th, 2008 1 comment

E3 2008 has already been filled with megaton announcements…and we’re not even through the first day!  Highlights of the day include a new Wiimote motion controller addon presumably featuring 1:1 motion detection, release dates for the second chapters of Fable and Gears of War, the update to XBox Live, and Final Fantasy XIII for the 360.  Yes.  The Xbox.  Dogs and cats living together total hysteria!

My dream E3 2008

July 11th, 2008 1 comment

My very short list of what I want to see from E3 2008.  All of which are incredibly unrealistic!

  • Earthbound finally brought to the Virtual Console. C’mon Nintendo! It was reviewed officially by the ESRB back in May, over 2 months ago.  Stop making the starmen.net community cry.  Educate nu-Nintendophiles about who Ness is and why he has appeared on three incarnations of Super Smash Brothers.  Pull the trigger already, we’re all waiting for this gem.
  • Kid Icarus on the Wii.  So what if the NES game wasn’t that good?  It’s been 20 years.  Announce the sequel already.  The masses have spoken…and whined and cried.  Hey Nintendo, do you really want to taste the salty tears of all those die hard Nintendophiles?
  • More retro remakes of games.  Words cannot describe how excited I am to see Bionic Commando: Rearmed, Mega Man 9, and Chrono Trigger DS announced.  Let’s see more of this stuff and keep the classics current, a la Stephen Totilo’s vision on an old episode of 1up Yours.
  • Rez for PSN to go along with the upcoming Pixeljunk Eden.  Playstation Network has been home to all sorts of hyper-artsy games like Everyday Shooter and Echochrome.  Rez (or a Rez sequel) being a part of that library would further cement the indie scene on PSN and additionally would mean I would finally get a chance to play it.
  • Anything regarding Final Fantasy XIII on the show floor.  I’ll take another 15 seconds of FMV at this point.  Just say something, dammit!

I don’t expect any of this stuff to be announced next week, but hey!  We’re allowed to dream, right?

P.S. I’m glad I held back on getting a new 3g iPhone so I could avoid the lines and they could work out the kinks. It’s a no brainer they were going to hit load issues on day 1: the phone has gotten more buzz than anything else tech related in the world within the past month. Not surprised in the slightest that iTunes servers exploded, regardless of whether or not the problems were load related.   Conversely, I did not expect the new software turning old-gen iPhones into iBricks in relation to this.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m going to get a 3g iPhone. But c’mon Apple, let’s do a little more testing before milking that cash cow a little more.

This week in awesome stuff…

Every now and then, I stumble on something absurdly awesome on the web.  It is my sworn duty to provide some exposure to these awesome gems of the internet.

The first gem I’ll credit to Matt who found this on gizmodo.

Hello Kitty Antivirus

That’s right.  Hello Kitty Antivirus AND Firewall.  Your computer needs not ever fear for its safety with Hello Kitty standing guard!

I found this on a blog entry by Earnest Cavalli on Wired Game|Life.  Artist “Antoinette J Citizen” recreated a room based on the first level of the original Super Mario Brothers.

I don’t think I could ever live in one of these rooms (maybe a bit too bright for me), but I would love to have the room on hand just to stare at.  Awesome.  I hope to see more of her work!

The Return to the Brink of Time

July 2nd, 2008 1 comment

Chrono Trigger, in my opinion the best RPG of the SNES era, is returning!  This time to the Nintendo DS.

According to a scan from Famitsu magazine posted on a japanese blog, the game will be an enhanced port of the SNES classic and will be arriving to the portable system in Winter of 2008.  This was officially confirmed with an official Square-Enix teaser site.

Wired Game|Life blogger Chris Kohler astutely points out that those gamers expecting Chrono Trigger to come out on the Virtual Console will be disappointed because, well, “Why sell it for $8 when they can slap it onto a Nintendo DS cartridge and get $40?”.  And he’s absolutely right.  Square Enix fans are absolutely the most rabid of consumers of anything Square Enix related.  How many versions of Final Fantasy I have come out?  Like 5?  How many versions of Final Fantasy IV have/will be coming out?  Like 3?  (Ok, I’m part of the problem here.  I have the SNES and the GBA versions of IV and will be picking up the DS remake when it comes out this summer).

How obsessive was I over Chrono Trigger?  I defeated the penultimate dungeon 3 times…in the same playthrough.  I cleared through the Black Omen in the 1000A.D., 600A.D., and in 12000 B.C., which to my disappointment did not do anything at all special.  I played through the game at least 10 times to try to see all the different endings snuck into the cartridge.  I was so gay for Chrono Trigger :P Still, the stupid Square fanboy in me will undoubtedly be picking up this version of Chrono Trigger when its released.  This game is probably in my top 3 games of all time and the number of hours spent on this game tinkering with the space-time continuum easily number over 150 across all playthroughs.  There’s just something about doing something in the prehistoric past knowing that it will could drastically change something millions of years later.

Chrono Trigger DS! -An enhanced port, not a remake.
